A little over a year ago, much of my life was shifting wildly or was already shattered: my relationship, my living situation, my health—and my religious observance. I had been secretly breaking Shabbos for a while, and finally acknowledged to myself that I was no longer committed to halakha, traditional Jewish law.
Vladimir Putin returned to the presidency of Russia for the third time last March. The next day, journalist Masha Gessen posted a powerfully revealing entry on her weekly New York Times blog about the difficulties Russia’s protest movement would face were it to succeed in ending Putin’s now 12-year reign.
Bic has developed a range of gender sensitive writing materials. Perhaps they were taking a lesson from Lego, the company that targets young girls with a set of 224 LEGO pink pieces from their Bricks and More range.
Chaim Leib Fox (Fuks) (1897-1984) was born in Lodz, Poland. He developed worldly interests even as a yeshiva student, and was soon involved with founding the Yiddish Writers’ Group in Lodz, engaged with the Bund, and then the Zionist workers movement.
She had a high school education and began writing poetry in Russian while still a young woman and was greatly encouraged by the Hebrew writer U.N. Gnessin.
Bel was born in Odessa and grew up during the terrible time of the Communist revolution.
There is no doubt that Jewish life is a hundred, a thousand times easier in Israel. That holds true, in a slightly different way, in New York, where I hail from. There is an insane array of options in both places—they’re veritable buffets of Jewish identities, experiences, organizations and resources.
Zychlinski’s father did indeed immigrate to the United States several times and was unable to convince his wife to come. She believed that American was no place for pious Jews.
In her newest book, Slouching Toward Adulthood: Observations from the Not-So-Empty Nest, she draws on that background and comes up with a penetrating analysis of today’s boomer parents and their frequently failed-to-launch offspring.
Molodowsky’s work reveals a woman striving to reconcile the opposing forces of religion and modernity, a realist and a skeptic who longed for miracles, a philosophic thinker who tempered deepest tragedy with irony and humor, and a spiritual seeker who despaired in God and humanity.

As a way of documenting this first stage of my experience I set up a camera in my living room to capture raw, vulnerable and spontaneous moments with my newborn child. As both exploration and visual journal, I was curious to see what I would uncover from the process. This Mother’s Day feels even more dissonant than usual. There’s a nightmarish distance between the treacly sentiments in ads for flowers and brunch menus and the awful reality for mothers in Gaza unable to ensure their children`s safety or for mothers in Israel like Rachel Goldberg-Polin, whose son Hersh is still held captive in Gaza. We say it every year––but especially this year: mothers don’t want a card or teddy bear, or breakfast in bed. Mothers want to keep their children safe and fed. Mothers want autonomy over their bodies and affordable, accessible health care.

Poignantly, these were pieces from a @yivoinstitute writing contest for Jewish teens in Europe, written and submitted before the Nazi incursion started. These young people, documenting their lives, had no idea of what was to come.
In the summer of 2018, @krinsteincartoons traveled to Vilnius/Vilna to bring six anonymous pre-WWII teenage autobiographies to life— using their words and his pictures. Here’s a snapshot of one of them, a middle-school Vilna girl he dubbed “The Rule Breaker.”
