For My Son, Jonathan

White ice lined the streets today,
whipped me clean and cold
in my bones.
I went out to buy meat
to make you a pot roast
with carrots and onions
in thick brown sauce.
I wanted to feel
that you and I
are family enough
for a proper meal.
