Be Prepared
I learned about the Supreme Court’s enabling of Trump’s restrictions on birthright citizenship wedged in the backseat between an inconsolable baby and a toddler lecturing me on how to be a machine. Their safety— and mine— is the legacy of birthright citizenship. My great-grandparents and grandparents received US citizenship through this foundational American right. Where would we be without it? I tried to convey this to my driving husband, who conveniently cannot fit between the two car seats and thus has the joy of focusing on the road. He said something to the effect of it being pointless to entertain those what-ifs. I was too nauseous to counter that clearly he didn’t have enough inherited trauma to understand the situation.
