Artist Helène Aylon Finishes A 20-Year Series

In her immersive digital installation dedicated to future generations, iconoclastic feminist artist Helène Aylon challenges those who hold the Ten Commandments in high esteem. She wants viewers to see what she sees: a dark foreboding emanating from the patriarchy, not from God. Her scrutiny of the revered text of the Third Commandment is her quiet but assertive protest. “I am a jealous God. I transfer the sins of the fathers onto the children up to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me” (Exodus 20:5). Aylon presents this installation as the conclusion to “The G-d Project: Nine Houses Without Women,” her acclaimed 20-year series highlighting the dismissal of women in Jewish traditions. “Afterword” is showing at the Kniznick Gallery at the Hadassah Brandeis Institute, Waltham, MA, through June 16, 2017 and then at the Jerusalem Biennale opening October 1, 2017.
